Gas prices (I know, I know. This subject is so cliche now =)
Ok, so I had this interesting conversation with my mom yesterday, one that really got me thinking. We were talking about gas prices (isn’t everyone nowadays? Jeez, it’s like the new conversation filler. You know, that thing that you bring up in conversation when you can think of nothing else to talk about?).
Anyways….
I know that both Presidential candidates have their own ideas about what to do to bring gas prices down and ease our dependence on foreign oil. McCain is for drilling offshore and using our own oil. Hmm interesting thought, right? Obama, on the other hand, says that drilling our own oil will not help anything at all, but the oil companies just need to be taxed more, which, he SAYS will then bring the price that we pay at the pump down.
Ok, I think this guy needs a wake- up call (and maybe a little more experience in Washington) before he makes these assumptions. I’m sure we all know that oil companies are run by men who want nothing more than more money. So if they are taxed more, what will stop them from raising the price at the pump? Nothing.
I think offshore drilling is a really good idea because it will ease our dependence on foreign oil, which is very important. Why would we want to get something we desperately need from countries who hate us, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia? Oh, here’s something kind of interesting I heard on the news today: Saudi Arabia has been telling us that it is not their fault that oil prices are so high, and that they are pumping all of the oil that they possibly can. Then, just a couple of weeks ago, the Saudis “discovered” (gasp!) that they are able to pump 700,000 more barrels a day than what they had been doing! How do you just “discover” something like that? Then, they came out and said that they will provide 200,000 of those “extra” barrels to the world “as needed.” Umm yeah- it’s needed. So again, why are we still getting our oil from them?
I think drilling offshore can also help bring jobs back to the U.S. because we don’t have those anymore. But think about it: drilling here will mean that we are going to need people to build and work the rigs. There are some jobs for the American people right there!
Look, I know I am still young and I don’t know everything (though Brooke would argue that I do =), but these arguments seem pretty logical to me. Let me kow what you think!
Thanks
